Elements of Composition

Today, I can totally say that my life evolves in 3 different world. And Photography is one of them after Graphics and Web Design.

As an Artist (Graphic Designer specially), I used to manipulate photos which is hard for me being a Photographer. As I continue to develop my skills as a Photographer, I usually composed my subject as one layout. Because I think its hard to prove specially to your friend when they know all about your “Photoshop Skills”.

Well, this post is not about me and to what I can do. I tell you guys, I am nothing compared to those who burn their eyebrows just to prove and be known in the world of Photography.

Anyway, what I am about to share to you is a special tutorials coming from Digital Photography School from Darren Rowse itself. Yes, I am an avid reader of his website and I continue to admire all his post.

This particular 2 part of Darren blog post is just a brief and put them together as one. If you would like to read more about his thoughts regarding to the elements stated below, you can visit DPS website, and I believe that you will get a lot of inspirations as I did. For now, enjoy and hope to see you here soon!

Good Composition is a key element of good photographs yet is something that is hard to define.

Instead of looking at composition as a set of ‘rules’ to follow – I view it as a set of ingredients that can be taken out of the pantry at any point and used to make a great ‘meal’ (photograph).

Alternatively I’ve often described it as a set of ‘tools’ that can be taken out of one’s compositional tool belt at any given time in the construction of a great image.

The key is to remember that in the same way as a chef rarely uses all the ingredients at their disposal in any dish – that a photographer rarely uses all of the ingredients of composition in the making of an image.

Today I’d like to look at five of the ingredients (or tools, or elements) of composition that I draw on in my photography. They’re not ‘rules’ – just things that I consider when setting up a shot. Check for yourself the Elements of Composition Tools in DPS
