Would you believe that many Photographers as of today hates Photoshop? Well, as I search the net and looking for a proof I would like to share and give you some insight what’s the difference of the two.
Photo manipulation is the application of image editing techniques to photographs in order to create an illusion or deception (in contrast to mere enhancement or correction), through analog or digital means. Its uses, cultural impact, and ethical concerns have made it a subject of interest beyond the technical process and skills involved. - wikipedia.org
But on this post, I will not elaborate and give you my insight. But, will share some tools/links for your own references.

The first picture/screenshot above is one of the great photo retoucher I found on the net. And his imagination is somewhat beyond your expectation. While the pictures below from wikipedia is the old tools used for photo manipulation in the late century perhaps.
The question is, can you do the same images/artworks from above site using the old tools below?

For more inspiration and jaw dropping images, visit Erik Johansson from Gothenburg, Sweden at alltelleringet.com.
Enjoy!

I started out in the late 80′s learning compositing in the darkroom from a photographer, William Warren. He did composites using duplicating film and an enlarger with pin registration along with lots of litho-film masks etc.
So the answer to the question is yes, buy why would you? It’s like asking “can you cook your food over an open fire you started by rubbing two sticks together?” Sure, but what’s the point?
If it’s about image integrity then don’t forget that images were manipulated in the ‘old days’ too. Now at least we expect they’ve been manipulated.

Hi Dennis, you had a great skills and powerful portfolio in your site.
To answer your inquiry, maybe the question is too broad or not define clearly. If we are going to analyze the process from the late year till now, there’s a lot of difference and advantages or disadvantages which can be seen in the results.
Maybe I carried away with the results itself as an artist who appreciate someones talents. And maybe I should direct my questions to how good is the software or digital age, don’t you think?
Thanks for visiting and more power!
Best regards,
Jason

Do you have any leads on schools to help my son develop his passion for photography esp. in photo manipulation? He wants to have the freedom, encouragement, and guidance to do this within the BFA setting.
We appreciate your suggestions, or referrals to artists who might also suggest.
Thanks .

Hi there,
Thanks for visiting my site! In terms of schools, I can’t give you any directions coz’ it will base from where you came from and Google is one of our friend who can help you to find the right person for the jobs.
As a Graphic Artist and Photographer, I learned the hard way and patience are still the key. I develop my personal skills thru experience and actual applications. If you want to know the basics, there’s a lot of tutorials and forums all around the net where you can start building your foundation.
Again, thanks and more power!
