When Flash Gets Right: Flash Photography Tutorial

While everybody thinks that having the great equipment in photography is enough, Jamir Design Photography Services teaches how to unleash the maximum potential of our captured memories. Make sure to keep your notes and pens up as I teach you how to use the flash effectively.

Introduction of Flash Photography

In a world full of technological advancements, improving a photo would be much easier compared before. However, it is always believed that “prevention is better than cure”. Why is there a need for improvement, if we could produce a great photo in just a snap? Why cure a photo when you can actually see the beauty in its simplest form? With that, flash photography is introduced.

As it was defined, flash photography is a term used to describe a photography in which an electronic flash is used to give light to dark subjects. It has been a known form of artistry that people love to utilize in order to produce a perfect photograph. But with the promising effect that it gives, some are still confused as to how it really works.

With that, I want to reminds everyone of the things that we should be mindful of when doing flash photography. First, make sure to position your camera horizontally to reduce the amount of shadows in the shots you’ve taken. While others may be fond of doing photography in a vertical position, I have to make it clear that the said angle is prone to have shadows on its edges, which is why photographers should opt to choose the former rather than the latter. Plus, photos that are usually taken in a horizontal position are more appealing than the shots taken in a vertical perspective, as to the shadows being produced are the concern.

Other than that, photographs that were taken in a horizontal orientation would ease out the process of bouncing the light from the flash. The best way to utilize the flash in your camera is to take photos in a horizontal position, especially if you’re not doing a layout or a poster.

Read The Manual

There are four ways to perfectly bounce the light from your flash, either by putting it in front, at the back, to the left and or to the right. Also, make sure that you press the right button as you position the flash in your desired manner. The main objective of this action is to soften up the light even before it hits your subject.

Lastly, I need to reiterate that knowing the place where you will be taking photos is essential in producing high-quality photographs. It is better to know the environment of your event, so as to be mindful of the light’s passageway. Bouncing the flash to the darker area opposite to the place’s light source would definitely improve the contrast and light balance of your photos.

Flash photography will be complicated, if you will not be reminded of the essential and basic things needed to produce an excellent one. Because when the flash gets right, photos would definitely tell a great story.
